GAWH Donation of Tibozole
Summary
The Global Alliance for Women's Health has been effective in the fight against HIV/AIDS in a number of ways. Mainly, its focus has been on publicizing the pandemic in Sub-Saharan Africa in many forums and on bringing together pharmaceutical companies that produce needed medicines with leaders of African nations beset by the disease.
GAWH brought the problem of opportunistic infections of people with HIV/AIDS in Burkina Faso to the attention of Johnson & Johnson, the manufacturers of Tibozole. As a result, Johnson & Johnson donated 36,000 patient treatments of its miconazole nitrate 10 mg muco-adhesive buccal tablet to GAWH.
On June 12, 2003 GAWH's representative in Burkina Faso presented this donation to the National Council to Fight HIV/AIDS and STIs, which in turn contributed it to several non-governmental organizations, two hospitals, centers of ambulatory treatment, and an association of surgical dentists. All recipients were extremely appreciative of the free treatment.
